STRIVERS Explore Natick Labs

On Tuesday May 31, 2016 the Strivers Running Club for Girls were invited by Garrison Commander Lt. Col. Ryan Raymond to run the Fitness Trails at the Natick Army Labs. The Fitness Trail is nearly one and half miles and circles the perimeter of the Labs with beautiful views of Lake Cochituate. In addition, the Strivers had the opportunity to meet Command Sergeant Major, Erika M. Gholar the highest ranking female military official in the Northeast, and learn about the research being done on the development of food, clothing, shelters and other items to support Soldiers in the U.S. military. The girls were also able to try some surprisingly tasty MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) at their pre-race carb loading pasta party. We thank the Natick Army Labs for such a beautiful and insightful run.

IMG_1887Our spring Team One raced in the Run Like A Maverick 5k held in honor of Elizabeth Schickel.  We were a team of over 60 runners and everyone had a great run and then enjoyed the pancake breakfast afterwards!

IMG_4228Once again we worked this Spring with Pat Conaway to help clean up our public spaces in Natick as well as learn about the importance of recycling.  The girls donated a morning of their April break to help clean the area of Pegan Cove.

IMG_4225STRIVERS supporter and friend, Uta Pippig, made a special visit to STRIVERS this spring while she was here to be honored for her 1996 win at the Boston Marathon.  Uta decided to run Boston last minute and shared the experience with us as well as her insights on goal setting and stretching.  We always welcome her visits as we are so honored to share any time with Uta!

IMG_4146The amazing team at Spaulding Outpatient Center in Framingham led by Jennifer Green and Coach Laura held a Running Clinic for both our Spring teams.  The STRIVERS performed 3 screening tests that were scored by physical therapists. They learned some total body exercises consisting of strength and control aimed to decrease injury risk.

Our 2015-2016 initiative was “Lead” where we focused on leading on the track as well as off the track. This fall we hosted a “sock” drive for A Place to Turn and a “diaper” drive for Natick’s Neighborhood Brigade.  The girls collected more than 500 pairs of athletic socks and over 3,000 diapers!  We are proud to help our neighbors!

Session 1 trained and ran in the 16th Annual Eastern Bank Flutie 5k.  STRIVERS have been participating in this race since 2009 and we had a record 80 people run as part of our team this year.  We had many PRs set and we won the award for largest Team.  To celebrate, Bill’s Pizzeria of Natick hostedIMG_1292 a pizza party for us.  In addition, the session 2 team supported us by volunteering at number pick up and hosting the water stop at the 1.5 mile mark.
