Program Overview

Fall 2019 – Registration will open on 6/10/19 at 7:00 AM

The STRIVERS Running Club for Girls program encompasses not only running, but exposing the girls to great motivational speakers, author-led discussion groups or workshops, and providing them with community leadership opportunities.

The STRIVERS Running Club for Girls program is designed for 5th -8th grade girls.

What’s New for FALL 2019

The Journal of Youth Running quoted William Bowerman, the renowned University of Oregon track coach and co-founder of NIKE, in a recent article.  Bowerman understood running was more than physical and more than measured by the first runner to cross the finish line.  He wrote in his book Jogging of the importance of being with others, of enjoying the shared experience, of “belonging” as integral to being motivated to run.

STRIVERS aims to create that sense of belonging by fostering an environment where girls share experiences, feel part of a team, and accomplish something together.  We strive to give your daughters a reason to run, provide companionship and a sense of identity & pride as they truly are part of something special. We work to help your daughter find her niche, the place where she belongs, regardless of how fast or slow she runs.

Races

Spring Session 1 will participate in the 20th Anniversary Flutie 5k to benefit the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.  This is the race that started it all for STRIVERS back in the fall of 2009!  We look forward to being at the start line again for the 10th time!  We hope to plan some fun Anniversary events around this race too.

Spring Session 2 will be running in The Bill’s Pizzeria 5k to benefit the Travis Roy Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to enhancing the life of spinal cord injury victims and families.  This will be our 9th year running in this terrific and family fun race that takes place in Newton Center.

Cross Training

All athletes realize the importance of cross-training.  We will be working with Functional Strength Coach and registered Yoga Instructor Rebekah Lacava this fall.  In a one hour session, the girls will work in pairs focusing on leg and core strength and balance as it relates to running.  The class will conclude with a mindful yoga practice.

Special Event for STRIVERS

Both Teams will have the opportunity to meet Becca Pizzi.   Becca is a Two Time World Marathon Challenge Champion. In 2018, Becca conquered the World Marathon Challenge …7 Marathons, 7 Continents, 7 Days.  Repeating her 2016 victory, Becca impressively crossed the finish line setting another World Record, putting her in the Guinness Book of World Records!  We’ll catch up with Becca on her latest accomplishments including running a marathon in all 50 States and her goal to complete the World Marathon Majors!

Community Outreach

Each session, the girls work on their community leadership by reaching outside of themselves and positively impacting the community they live in. Or, we introduce the girls to a cause we have studied and feel strengthens their character as young women.

For Session 1 and Session 2, our teams will be collecting Tween & Teen Personal Care Items for A Place To Turn.  Supplying other young females with hygiene products to take care of themselves not only helps these individuals with their basic health but, increases their confidence as young women.  This confidence thus strengthens their success rate both in and out of school.

  • Session 1 will also have the opportunity to represent STRIVERS at Natick Days to be held on Saturday, September 7th. (More details to follow.)
  • Session 2, will also have the chance to support Team 1 with hosting a water stop at The Flutie 5k to be held on September 29th. (More details to follow.)

A Place To Turn is a local Natick organization that is committed to providing emergency food and clothing to our neighbors in the MetroWest Community.

Please note, our spring season will consist of two sessions and two different races.

Refund Policy: The registration fee minus $40 processing fee will be refunded if cancellation occurs before the first week of practice.  No refunds will be issued after the session starts.

Our program runs twice a year, Fall and Spring.   We limit the number of girls we take in each session in order to make this experience rewarding for your daughter and allow us to maintain the intimacy of the group.  Girls interested in STRIVERS should have some athletic ability and the desire to run.
